Exploring Newport

This post marks the end of the first full day on our vacation. So we’re all super excited to tell you about it.

First, we woke up after many snoozes of the alarm (Mom’s phone). We didn’t actually get motivated until 10:45. So after everyone was dressed, brushed up, and ready to leave, we called for the car. After about 10 minutes of driving, including finding a parking spot, we arrive at the Touro Synagogue.

The Touro Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in the United States, and is also only available by tour. In order to book one of these tours, we walked into the Loeb Visitor’s Center, in which there are tons of exhibits, a copy of George Washington’s letter to the Jews of Newport, and holograms of skits portraying different scenarios Jews faced in Newport in the mid-late 1700‘s. When the clock struck 12:15, we embarked on our 2 minute journey up to the synagogue. The synagogue, as we learned, was designed to look like a New England style building, designed by the architect Peter Harrison, a pretty well known guy back in 1763. Our tour guide told us the history behind the Jewish population in RI, and how the Touro Synagogue came to be, including how it got it’s name. After I took some photos, and Michael got his souvenir, we left and went to get lunch.

Everyone enjoyed their lunch at the Bar & Board (⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️). I had the Clam Chowda and a burger, while Mom had a Caesar Salad, and Michael, the same burger. Ask any one of us, and we’ll tell you it’s a must visit place, or you can ask the hotel concierge, and she’ll say the same thing.

After lunch, we strolled around town. We bought Michael a cool new pair of shades, as his other pair were nowhere to be seen. We also stopped for gelato on the way. I had stracciatella, and Michael got Nutella. Mine was extremely tasty, and we will definitely be going back. After, we got gas and went back to the hotel, where we relaxed and got ready for dinner.

We dined at Smoke House (no ”The”). I had a Pulled Pork sandwich, Mikey had a delectable burger, and Mom had a Brisket sandwich. All of which we waited a long time for due to the short staffed kitchen. After dinner, we saw fireworks on the other side of the Newport Harbor, and while watching, discovered the two missing chefs!

We went back to the hotel, where we have now finished our day, and where we’ll start anew.
