After a very early breakfast and chilling out in the morning, watching hummingbirds, the kids and I got ready to do a self-guided tour on the Selvedura bridge tour. We wanted to have the ability to take our time going across the bridges so we could admire the surroundings. It was really really cool. Monteverde Cloud Forest is an amazing rainforest, with clouds that move in over the canopy based on the temperature and humidity. We were fortunate to see the clouds moving in while we were going along the trail.
The bridges range in length and height across the 8 suspension bridges you get to cross along the 2 mile walk. Our favorite bridge was the longest one and was really high up. The bridge was 515 ft long and was over a canopy that was 360 ft high. We were very interested in all of the flowers, plants and trees that were throughout the forest. We also got to hear some amazing birds. I had wished that we would have seen a Resplendent Quetzel, an elusive, but amazingly colorful bird, but we got to see and hear many others.
After our walk amongst the tree tops and within the clouds, we decided to have lunch (which was great) and Michael was finally able to get his chocolate milk shake. As we were walking down to get our car, we saw a Coati up close and personal. They really are super cute. Then, we made our way over top Monteverde Cloud Forest National Park. We got there really late and it was clear we definitely needed more time in this part of Costa Rica to truly experience all of it. But we were happy to get up there.
After that drive, which was on some really tough and bumpy dirt roads, we came across the ice cream place that one of the bellman at The Springs Resort pointed us to. Monteverde dairy, in addition to making cheese, also makes ice cream. So we stopped in to check out the ice cream in Costa Rica. Let me tell you.....it was amazing. And we should know. We are a major ice cream family...tasting ice cream wherever we go. Their mint choco chip was the best I've ever tasted. Stephen loved the cookies and cream that they had.
Afterwards, we went back to our hotel to relax for a bit. Some really loud and crazy birds were causing a stir outside of Stephen's room for a while. They were cool to watch for a while. After a while, we went out to dinner at a place that was really busy the prior night, Taco Taco because it looked good. Unfortunately, it was just okay. Then we went back to the room so we could pack up. We decided that given the roads here and the time of our flight home, we decided to check out tomorrow and stay at a hotel near the airport. So we packed up and headed to bed so we could enjoy the afternoon in Monteverde before heading to San Jose.
